>1. The 'shift up' light seems to come on way early.

Yup.
It's supposed to annoy you into shifting early for fuel economy.
What can you do about it:
1) Ignore it
2) If it's the same as my '86, Saab thoughtfully provided a seperate fuse
for the idiot light.
3) I' seen people put a strip of black electrician's tape over it.
4) if ambitious, take dash apart and remove bulb.

>2. Generally speaking, when would you shift into 5th gear? (what speed)

With a slightly underpowered 16V 900s:
1) On a flat and level local road with nil traffic, I can be in 5th at 37MPH.
2) Getting up on the highway, merging into traffic, I can hold 4th to 62.
Rev to about 4300RPM in 2-4 gear.
