Restoration Issues

Hello,
I am new to this list as of yesterday. I don't currently own a SAAB but I
used to own a 1986 900 Turbo in the Rose Quartz Metallic color with sunroof,
burgundy leather interior and 5 speed which was my first car. I deeply regret
selling that car due to unusual and troublesome circumstance not related to
the car itself. The car and I should never have been separated. In any case,
I look all over to see if I can find a duplicate of that car and apparently
seems quite rare combination as I *never* see one. I think I owned one of
maybe three or four of that exact combination imported to the US. Or so it
seems. :)

While looking for the non-existant Rose Quartz turbo, I've tried to
entertain the possibilty of having a different SAAB which begs the question
of attendant restoration issues. I hear over and over again from Collectible
Automobile magazine and other sources to buy the best car you can to minimize
restoration costs and hassles. Fair enough- and logical. That's a no brainer.
However, money doesn't grow on trees for me. I feel I can buy an old SAAB and
restore and rebuild it mechanically in time, spreading the cost out over
years if needed. I see parts for mechanical restoration, but I don't see much
for cosmetic and interior and all the little bits. If I take a step to
restore a SAAB, I don't want to get the car to top shape mechanically only to
have a car that has a trashed interior because there's no parts availability
or I have to comb junkyards for parts.

What's the lowdown on non-mechanical restoration issues? I don't want a
cracked dash or faded door panels, trim, loose door inserts etc... as I
understand those can't be restored or reconditioned to 'as new' standards.
You can build or buy any one of thousands Mustang or Chevelle parts from a
catalog. How about a SAAB? Any catalogs you would suggest?

Sorry if this is all old hat to you folks. I'm sure it is. I have missed
some buying opportunities for expensive (to me) but nice SAABs and I'm
feeling like my only hope for getting back into the SAAB family is bringing
an old cheap one back to life to a standard I would approve of- if that's
even possible at all.

Otherwise, I'll lurk along on the list and see what information I can catch
as someday I'll have a SAAB. Some day...

Thanks for any thoughts,
Brad
