Front End Thunk

My 1988 9000S at 254,000 miles has developed a 'thunk' which appears upon
braking or acceleration. I thought it was time to do the thrust bushings
on the A-arms again, but when I got the right hand side A-arm apart the
bushing was fine. I checked the other one cautiously, just loosening the
nut enough to see if it was okay, and it was.

Now I am still looking for my 'thunk'. The motor mounts were changed,
but it's been a while, so they could be going, but the original motor
mounts went a lot longer. The anti-sway bar bushes could stand replacing
because they're getting hard, but they don't seem to be shifting or causing
the 'thunk'. I don't have any wheel bearing noise and there is now low
speed noise when turning like a bad CV joint (the boots are in great
shape). Both front wheels have been removed, refitted, and carefully
re-torqued. Is there any thing I'm missing beside the lower right hand
engine mounts?

Has anyone on the SAAB Net ever had to replace the strut bearings on top of
the struts (I was told this is a rarely stocked part available only from
SAAB) ? I know VAG vehicles wear their strut bearings out with regularity.

If I need new mounts, what is the group consensus: 1) OEM hydraulic ($69
ea.) , 2) Non-OEM hydraulic ($42 ea.), 3) Non-OEM solid rubber ($38 ea).
Do the solid mounts last a lot longer? How much rougher will the engine
feel with solid rubber mounts?

Please e-mail me directly if you can - I'm anxious to get things right
again. Much thanks in advance for any help you can give !
