The main problem here is that the OEM buys a specific shock for the cars
he's making now, and keeps a quantity of the dozens or hundreds of
different models used over the years in the spare parts pipeline. (this is
one reason why 'genuine parts' seem so expensive - you're paying for the
privilege of guaranteed access to almost every part of every car made in
the past generation, while aftermarket parts suppliers get to choose which
parts they will let you have). The aftermarket suppliers, however, have a
hard time justifying the shelf space required to keep different parts for
every similar car made over the years. Therefore, a Koni 9000 shock or a
Bilstein 9000 strut, for example, may be the same part number for every
9000 made, while Saab may have used a dozen different specs over the years,
depending on the precise weight and spring settings, changes made to the
body stiffness over the years, and the type and size of OE tires, let alone
the different 'S' and 'Turbo' suspensions.
