9-3 Transformation via Tires

I have a 2002 9-3 SE HOT, which came with Pirelli P6000's. I bought the
carÊastÊearÊslightly) used, with 16,000 mile on it.

Having owned/driven a succession of Honda & Acura products, I loved the Saab
EXCEPT for the steering. The car felt like the steering rack was loose or
the suspension bushings were missing. As it was under warranty, I even had
the dealer check it out - everything was 'in spec'. I was experiencing lots
of torque steer under hard acceleration, combined with excessive tire
squealing at times --Ênd a general sense of 'squirleness' at lower speeds,
driven moderately around town. The Honda products always had great steering
feel/feedback, and I couldn't understand why the Saab felt more like a 1964
Chrysler Imperial than a Euro import in steering feel.

Move forward to last week, 25,000 miles on the car now and the tires down to
about 2/32's of an inch (OK -- the right front at least!). I do my homework
and settle on a new set of Yokohama AVS Db - S2's in the original stock size
(215-55-16). Discount Tire matched another 'major tire retailers' advertised
price of $110 per tire, installed and balanced.

OH MY --ÊOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLYÊ- it was like someone installed steering
rack braces, solid poly bushings, a strut tower braceÊnd every other
suspension trick in the book. The car is now an absolute JOY to drive, it
corners better, NO torque steer, NO squirleness, and it is now SO quiet
inside on the highway. It's an amazing tire in the rain as well (as I live
inÊempe, AZ, I cannot comment on snow performance)

I can not comment if changing to ANY tire other than the P6000 offers this
improvement, but I would highly recommend you consider this tire when
replacement time comes. And no, I do not have a vendetta against Pirelli nor
do I work for Yokohama or Discount . . . it's just that I am so impressed
with the improvements wrought by a change in tires, I needed to mention it to
this group.
