B Motor Cylinder Head

During my seemingly never-ending adventures of replacing cracked B motor
cylinder heads, I have noticed that some heads have a set of central
coolant flow holes that mate with corresponding holes in the block, and
some heads do not have these holes.

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two designs (other than
one has an extra set of holes, wiseguy <g>), and perhaps shed some light
on which of the two designs is more crack-resistant? Sometimes
intuition tells me that more holes are better, but other times I'm not
so sure: perhaps slowing down the water flow by eliminating the central
holes facilitates better heat exchange.

I dunno, I'm guessing; anyone have some facts ?

Thank you,
Jeff Rininger
