Crank Angle Sensor

My engine coded a month or two ago, and it read out as a crank angle
sensor fault. My mechanic blamed it on an oil leak at the rear main
seal: apparently some oil got on the sensor. Cleared the code and
all was fine (other than the leak). It coded again this week. The
car is now losing about a quart of oil per thousand miles, so I'm
going to have the seal replaced soon. The mechanic suggests
replacing the sensor at the same time.

My question is: how many of you have ever had this sensor fail, and
if I don't replace the sensor, will it cost a lot more to replace it
later if it fails (in other words, is the labor a lot less if you're
doing the seal at the same time?)
