When my 86 9000T lost first and second gears, it was
the linkage rubber bushing. My car's shifter is
normally pretty sloppy. Maybe that was why I didn't
notice the deteriorating bushing until it was too
late. Days before the linkage failed, my girlfriend
(now wife) occasionally miss-shifted into third
instead of first; while I had no trouble. I
unknowingly compensated for the extra slop. From the
first sign of shifting trouble to lost of gears was
also about 30 minutes in my case.
