Re: Highway Wandering

I wanted to update those people who helped diagnose my 1993 9000 cse's
highway wandering, especially in a cross wind. The car has 118 k miles
on it. It was highly suggested that I replace the bushings on the A
frame arms as these usually go out in about 50-75 k miles, as verified
by my Saab mechanic. Steven Goldberger felt that I should get rid of
the Michelin MXV4+ tires. So, following the advice given me, I
replaced the A frame bushings, ball joints, the upper strut mount
bearings, and the sway bar links (with bushings) on the front
suspension. I didn't replace the struts because they seemed to have
some life left in them. I purchased the parts from ips-parts.com
(Import Parts Specialists), as suggested by David Prantl, for a total of
$282, including overnight shipping. All of the parts are World-Pac or
Moog, and I chose the higher priced version of the choices offered. I
tried to compare prices at eeuroparts.com, but their prices seemed quite
high, and I was somewhat confused whether their price included parts for
both right and left sides. Eeuroparts.com has a very good diagram of the
parts location. The total cost of the parts, alignment, and SF labor
came to $782, lower than the $1150 estimate from a Saab dealer. The San
Francisco shop I used is Embarcadero Auto, well known in the Bay area.
However, I feel that Burlingame Saab would have done as good a job, but
were higher because of Saab imposed part prices - they wouldn't use my
provided parts..

The car immediately drove better. The suspension handles the road far
better than it has ever done in the 3 + years I've owned it. It follows
a streetcar rail without squirming as it previously did, and the car
readily responds to direction changes. Also there is far less front end
clunking noise. The money seems to have been well spent.

As to the tires, I'm open to replacing the Michelins, but with what?
Rebushing the front end has brought out the poor cornering quality of
these tires, although they are great, but noisy, on a highway. I'm not
interested in buying 16' wheels for low profile tires, but would welcome
some suggestions on tires that fit the standard 15' wheel.
