This is SOP for any car with FWD or any rear drive car with independent
suspension, with this kind of mileage. This is not expensive.

*IF* this car has the 2.3L engine (the engine was changed part way through
the model year) you will probably need to have the timing and balance
chains and sprockets replaced. Now, you are looking at over $1000. Delay
doing this, and you stand a near-certain chance of putting the valves into
the pistons when one or the other chain breaks (and takes the other chain
out with it), adding the cost of a head rebuild and the inconvenience of
walking home from whereever it is that the chain breaks.

*IF* otoh this car has the 2.0L engine, all you need to do is roll in a new
chain and check that the tensioner is doing its thing correctly - around
$300.

How do you tell which engine you have? Look at the top of it. If you see
a distributor with spark plug wires running under a black cover running
down the center of the engine, you have the 2.0 (Old Style) engine. If you
see a red thing labelled 'Direct Igntion' (or 'DI' or something like that)
running the length of the engine, then you have the 2.3L (new style)
engine)

Owning a car like this over the next 5 years will cost you less than buying
something like a new Ford Focus, but to be sure, you will be paying repair
bills over that period of time, and those bills will be higher (and
sometimes *much higher*) than the equivalent repairs on said Ford Focus.
This was a $25,000+ car when it was new - 10 years ago!!!
