Top Sensor Specs

I have a 91 900 Convertible. The rear window defogger only works
intermittently. Following a helpful suggestion from a fellow tsn
subscriber, I determined that the problem is the sensor that detects
whether the top is up or down. This appears to be a mercury switch that
is mounted so that it is vertical when the top is up and horizontal when
the top is down.

Unfortunately, 2 Saab dealers and an Internet Saab parts supplier have
told me that this part (P/N 6951594) is discontinued. I called SaabUSA
Customer Assistance to try to find out the electrical specifications of
this device (particularly the amount of current it is expected to switch
on and off) so that I could try to rig a substitute from an electronics
supplier (e.g., Radio Shack), but they told me that once a part is
discontinued, Saab tosses the specs.

If anyone has replaced this sensor, knows an acceptable substitute for
it, or has some information about it, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
There don't appear to be any plug-type connectors for this sensor, and
I'd rather not cut the part out and start experimenting until ater it
dies completely.

As I wrote the above, it just occurred to me that the new 9-3
convertibles have a rear window defogger that shouldn't be operated with
the top down. What do they use? I guess it's back to the dealer, but
I'd still like to hear from anyone with info about this topic.
