I am a 'classic' 900 (and 99) fan. To be sure, saabs aren't for everyone,
or, at least they didn't used to be. A suburu is a fine ride, to, you
know, you can lift a subaru engine out by hand! The tires are cheap, and
they keep going. And hey, ALL WHEEL DRIVE, I recently piloted one of those
new 911 super carrars - 400 bhp, 400 ft lbs of torque - and they're
lighter. Dump the clutch and there's no muscle car smoke show, you're just
GONE!

THe newest car I have is a 85 900t 16valve and it's well being is a concern
to be. I got bitten by the Troll on account of a friend who mentored me in
saab lore and maintenance. I couldn't afford my fleet if I had to pay for
repairs. It's true, anyone can fix you suburu and get parts, while
bringing your SPG into Joes can be a real mistake, and the dealers and
speciality garages charge outrageously.

I like the smell of an old saab. I like that the door handles from a 74
99 gle are the same as those of the classic 900. THe ball joints do go,
but there is only one part, they are all the same. Working on an old 900
8valve 'h' motor (or a 'B' engine like in the 99's) can be frustrating, if
you don't know the 'tricks', but I always feel like those Sweedish
engineers were thinking of the weekend mechanic when they designed them.

The water pumps do seem to be almost a consumable part - like a brake pad,
and scraping the old gasket off is a pain.

I just love that curved winshield, even though most of mine are pretty bead
blasted.

I can understand you defection and respect it, IT'S OK! You tried.
