Yep there has been several recalls. Your problem is almost certainly
related to a faulty ECU (Engine Management Unit). The symptons are very
similar/same as you emntioned and is related to corrosion of the printed
circuit board in the ECU. This has been caused by a corrosive sulphourous
vapour given off by a rubber bung which seals the unit. Saab has their
ECUs manufactured by a 3rd party and, strictly, this is not a Saab design
problem, more a problem with their 3rd party manufacturer. ECUs are now
sealed with a polyurethane material.

The other thing you should have performed on the ECU is to have it
upgraded to MY2000 to rectify a problem with stalling and intermittent
rough idel. This is a problem of carbon build up in the throttle bottle.
The problem can be temporarily rectified by havving youer dealer clean the
throttle body, however the long term resolution is to have the ECU upgrade
with a modified program which resoilves this problem.
