Can't comment on the hesitation. But I do know about the leak you
described around the distributor.

The leak is an O ring on the shaft to the distributor. Mine leaked on my
'88 900S a couple of years ago. I replaced with a new O ring found in the
plumbing department of the local Home Depot. Set me back 25 cents. Hasn't
leaked yet.

Here's how to do it:

There is a metal plate, really a two pronged fork that is held with a 13mm
bolt. Before doing anything mark a line running from the distributor shaft
onto the head. This will ensure that the timing isn't screwed up when
re-attaching the distributor.

After marking, remove the fork. The distributor simply slides out of the
head. You should notice that the end of the distributor shaft is a 'key'
that fits only one way onto the end of the camshaft under the camcover, so
you really can't mess this up as long as the mark had been made.

The O ring sits in a channel on the shaft. Mine was stiff and hard as a
rock, thus the leak. I had to take a razor blade to cut it off.

The new Home Depot O ring slips right on, the distributor slides right back
onto the head. Line up the marks you made, put the 'fork' back in place
and torque down the bolt.

Easy stuff. Good luck and happy Saabing!!

Jim Miller
