That is sound reasoning, but those same engineers had certain priorities to
work with at the time they designed your car's cooling system. It's likely
that perfect health after age 12 wasn't terribly high on their list.

Sure. I strive to do this it in every single SAAB I own.

Yes. The cooler thermoswitch in question does everything equally well like
the original (12-year-old) switch, except it reduces the magnitude of the
temp change experienced by your engine while sitting in traffic (with the
a/c turned off). Instead of climbing to 11 o'clock or higher on the temp
gauge, the new switch kicks on the fans at 10 o'clock or less. A smaller
temp swing means less head gasket stress, and that's always a good thing !

Another thing to consider is how much longer is that original switch going
to remain perfectly good. It's eventual failure could very quickly and
easily put your motor out of commission.

Lastly, a new switch (with guaranteed-better performance than the old one)
costs a measly six bucks, and adds two minutes of work to a cooling service
job that already includes draining the coolant for other reasons.
