The timing chain could be replaced with the engine in the car, however with
the oil leak it could be a number of things. The oil pump is mounted in
the face of the timing chain cover and is run off the crank-shaft. You
could have a leak in the cover itself, or in the oil pump. If otherwise in
good shape I'd go ahead and spend the $600 and make sure all seals at that
end are solid. With the age of the car it's well worth spending the bucks
now and have it all done at once. Else you'd be bringing it back in again.

I just had my timing chain done myself about a year a go on my '88. It too
had an oil leak at not only that end but also the output shaft. Had the
chain and oil pump done all at once, and a month later, to spread the cost,
did the clutch and seals at the output shaft.
