Hi Bob: In the infancy of our 1987 900S, we were experiencing similar
behavior. Engine dieing briefly, along with the check engine light. The
dealer could not duplicate, and as Murphy dictates, it progressed and got
worse over time. I began to notice that the tach also would dip towards zero
if the lack of power was present long enough...this pointed me towards spark
(or lack, thereof). Try to see if your tach is telling you similar. It acts
as a voltmeter that's looking at pulse rate of the coil. Ours turned out to
be a gizmo in the fuse box. I think it was called 'ignition amplifier'. Looks
like a relay, but on the side, it shows a transistor. Anyway, when the car
was assembled, one of the spade lugs (the connector that each blade slides
into) was not inserted properly. It was very recessed, making a
poor/intermittent connection. I had to disconnect the battery (RECOMENDED!),
uproot the fuse box, bend the tang out on the spade lug, and reinsert. It was
fine after that. The way I finally pinpointed it was to tap on items with a
screwdriver handle. When I tapped on this component, the idling engine became
very irratic, and many things (relays) started to click. One sad note is that
the computers up until about 1989(?) did not store codes, so the dealer
cannot retrieve anything from past 'check engine' events.
