Regarding your question about the reliability of the 99 GLi, have the fuel
injection system checked thoroughly once including a fuel filter
replacement. Part from this just go through regular servicing. Normally
99's stay very reliable when serviced according to the service schdule but
do not over service your 99.
I bought my 99 eight and a half years ago when it was 17 years old and if
you will guess...yes, with 71000 kms which stand for 45000 miles. The car
has the mechanical fuel injection and was in a very bad shape. After fixing
it a little bit ( never a restoration ) I drove untill now 235000 kms in a
very hard life ( fast driving, towing trailers, unleaded fuel without any
additieves etc. ) and had only four breakdowns during this period. With
306000 kms this is still my every day car and going very strong. It will
change only if I will get a company car ( sorry that I work for VW at the
moment ).
Have a good luck with the 99 and enjoy it for long milage.
