Inside the mast is a nylon cable with teeth along one side. This does
break over time.

You can obtain a new mast from the dealer. The last time I bought one for
my 92 9000 it was about USD15.00. You will need a helper to do the
replacement.

First loosen and remove the nut that attaches the mast to the fender. Then
have the helper turn on the radio as you pull the mast out of the fender.
The teeth should face the front of the car. Take the new mast as thread
the cable as far as you can into the tube that you removed the broken one
from. Then have your helper turn off the radio. Apply light pressure so
that the motor will catch the cable. It will pull the mast into the tube.
Then return the nut to lock the mast back into place.
