Direct Ignition Cassette

Problems with the Direct IgnitionCassette in 9000's have been mentioned
quite often on the SaabNet (and beginning to be mentioned on
NG900/9-3/9-5). On the early cassettes the failure usually resulted in the
engine beginning to missfire on one or more cylinders, with the cause being
the individual coils were losing insulating fluid. Saab made a design
change which reduced this problem of fluid loss. Maybe so...but the
'newer' design apparently has problems also.

Our 1993 9000 quit last Saturday, leaving us stranded. Engine would turn
over fine but wouldn't fire. A tow to the dealer and a repair bill for
$400+ and the car runs fine again. Problem? Failed Ignition
Cassette...sudden failure, no missfiring whatsoever. I kept the failed
cassette and looked it over. After removing the black plastic spark plug
housing I found the actual failure point...what appears to be a transformer
had almost literally 'burned up'...you could smell it. I suppose it's the
part that transforms the 12 volt battery voltage to the 400volt charge that
is used to fire the coils. (the coils were all 3/4 full of fluid...which I
guess is normal?). Unfortunatelly the transformer is not a replacable
part.

The part # of this cassette is, I think, 913440. Anyone know if there is a
further improved one?

Had I known the problem was the ignition cassette at time of failure, a lot
of money could have been saved by replacing it myself. But it's hard to
make a diagnosis when stranded w/o tool or a way of checking it or the
knowledge of what to look for. Perhaps tho the above information will help
others out there save a bit of money by knowing one item to look for if
their engine quits.
