NG900 Old Age

Eight years or so ago I became the proud owner of my first Saab, a bright
red, NG900S (1995). Shortly afterwards I discovered Saabnet and found it a
great resource for my new car/owner questions. Now I have a mature car (same
one) and old car/owner questions. The car now has 140,000 km and has been
through a number of more and less expensive repairs over the past couple of
years, in addition to maintenance. These include clutch replacement, rear
hatch air lift piston replacement, brakes, tires andÊnti-sway bar (right
name?) bushings.ÊNow I am facing a major air conditioning job to replace the
condenser and receiver/dryer to the estimated tune of $1,600 (Canadian). My
question as I hold off on the A/C work, since it doesn't affect safety or
driveability, is 'What else is likely toÊreak downÊt this point and is it
time to pass it on to someone who loves working on Saabs him/herself rather
than maintaining them through a dealer?'.

Does anyone out there have a suggestion? And if I replace it now, what can
ever replace it given the move away from a hatchback? The new 9-3 is about 4'
wider (mirror to mirror) and would make a presentlyÊight garage and driveway
fit almost too tight. Also reliability factor is more or less unknown (or is
it?) If I want the hatchback/wagon space maybe Volvo V40. If I can be happy
with a 4 door sedan there is a lot more choice now that the 9-3 is just
another one in the pack. Apart from 9-3 maybe VW Passat? Audi A-4? BMW
3-series? Ideas welcome.

Thanks ... Dennis Waddington
