I don't know if your ABS light has anything to do with this, but I can tell
you that I had very similar problems with my 87 900S when the voltage
regulator was failing. My problems started a year after I bought the car
and finally got around to fixing the air conditioner. Apparently, the extra
load of the compressor clutch was the straw that broke the camel's back, and
I found I couldn't have it on and the headlights at the same time, or the
car would begin to run rough and eventually die.

Have you tried putting a voltmeter on the battery with the car off, then on?
It should be somewhere around 12 to 12.5 volts with the car off, then jump
to 13.5 or 14.5 with the car running.

FWIW, I first replaced my voltage regulator with a non-Bosch part that was
considerably cheaper. It worked for a while, but began giving me problems
after only a month or so. The Bosch part, in my IMHO, is well worth the
money.

Good luck!
