Re: Glowing Alternator Light

Chances are, it's a shorted diode in the alternator. With the bad diode,
you get a single phase AC voltage showing up on the alternator light. As
the RPMs increase, the duty cycle decreases, meaning the voltage is on for
a longer period of time - which makes the light glow brighter.

If you (or your mechanic) sticks an oscilliscope on the alternator winding
that connects to one side of the warning light, you'll actually see the AC
voltage duty cycle change as you change the RPMs.

The fix is to replace your alternator or rebuild it, replacing the bad
diode(s).
