I don't know if either will work, but two techniques come to mind. The
first is to pour water down the air intake. No, don't use a garden hose,
but just dribble the water in. The theory is that when the water turns to
steam in the cylinder, it blasts carbon off the valves and tops of the
pistons. Another substance to try is available at GM dealer parts
departments and some auto parts stores. It's called Goodwrench Top End
cleaner, or AC Delco Top End cleaner. It comes in about a sixteen ounce
can that looks like a sixteen ounce beer can, and it consists of
petroleum distillates. You slowly pour in half a can and then dump in the
rest, stalling the engine. The solvents are supposed to loosen the carbon
deposits. A can costs about four or five dollars US. Ask an oldtimer, as
the kids at the parts counter might not know what it is.
