Tie Rod End

Hi all- the tie rods on my 92 900 look ok, but the rubber boots on both are
split right across the middle. These are the outer ends I'm referring to.

Does anyone know what might cause this, and is it something that needs to be
fixed? THe car is in otherwise great shape, I just don't wan't to fix them
until I understand what they do, and what problems this condition could
cause...

Thanks in advance as always....

Chris
