The gauge in the NG 900 (and all Saabs from 1995 on) is driven from the
computer. In the case of the 900, the gauge position is programmable to
some extent - and can in fact be programmed to reverse course!

What you need is for a technician with an ISAT or Tech II to determine
whether the computer is 'seeing' the correct vehicle temperature. If it is
not, your problem is worse than just what the needle is doing - the
computer uses the perceived temperature to adjust the fuel-air mixture,
too. Of course, it may be less costly to 'shotgun' in a new temperature
sensor than to pay for a proper diagnosis, but it may also be a wasted effort.
