Sounds awfully familiar :) Just went through this on my '88 9000 and yes,
the fix is relatively trivial. Step one is removing the plywood floor in
back to gain access to the top of the sending unit. (Never did my 900's yet
but on the 9K there's a little cover plate with 2 fancy fasteners you have to
open to gain access to the top of the fuel tank once the floor is out). Pop
the connector off, clean the contacts up, and replace it. That should fix
the 'bias' problem. Throughout the rest of this car they've used pretty
decent connectors, yet on something as critical as the fuel sending unit,
exposed to the outside elements, they used a brain damaged little non-sealed
connector >:(

While you're at it why not unscrew the locking ring for the sending unit,
pull it out, and take it apart and clean the gunk out of the bottom? Just
unscrew the little nut on the bottom of the sending unit and the whole thing
comes apart quite nicely. Take care not to damage the fragile resistance
wires inside, though.

BTW I heard rumors that on the NG900's the fuel tank has to come out to do
this :(
