Re: OG900 vs NG900

I presently own a '95 900 SET, but have previously owned a 99, 2 OG900s and a
'92 9KT. About 18 months ago, I bought my daughter a '92 900S, a car that she
really longed for. I rarely see her OG900 (she's away at college during the
school year and working during the summer) but whenever she and the car are
home, I always check up on her 900. A few observations on the OG vs NG
discussion-
1) The OG900 was a good car for its time, but has a distinctly OLD look and
feel to it -but that is surely subjective. It is much more upright than the
newer design. Certainly old doesn't mean bad and new doesn't always mean
better. 2) The OG900 has a rattly quality to it- when you slam a door closed
there is a metallic/glass sound that NG900 doesn't exhibit. The NG900 is much
quieter over the road. (BTW- both the '92 and '95 have about 105K miles) 3)
The seats on the OG900 are distinctly better than those on the NG900. They
are not as flat, have better side bolstering and the leather has stood up
better than the leather seat coverings on the NG900. My daughter does not
like the headrest position on the NG900- she says it pushes her head too far
forward, to me, it's fine. 4) Side/Rear visibility is much better on the
OG900- there aren't many cars old or new that equal it. Early Saab literature
stressed the better visibility offered by the narrow A pillars and B pillars
on the OG900. Saab seemed to have forgotten about that on the NG900. Perhaps
newer rollover standards and windshield mounting required this change. 5)
Routine engine maintenance access is slightly better on the NG900, clutch
access is much worse. 6) The NG900 has a cleaner, better integrated engine
bay, while the OG900 has components everywhere. Obviously, this was to
accommodate additional engine management equipment needed to meet
emissions/safety. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.
