} Where do heavy duty oil leaks come from? The used car lot
} dealer says 'valve cover,' but I don't trust him.

Are you sure it's really engine oil and not power steering fluid?

} Repair record shows power steering has been a problem.
} What does it take to repair/replace it? (The steering itself
} seemed OK, just the effort to move the wheel was high.
} On the highway, it was fine.)

Generally, replacing the power steering rack with a *rebuilt* rack
with steel sleeves does the job. If the power steering pump has been
run dry, you may also need to replace the inner workings of the ps
pump.

I had an '84 900 with a badly leaking rack and a leak around the ps
pump connections. The inside of the engine compartment - especially
towards the firewall - was always covered in oil (and dirt that
stuck to the oil). Based on a tip from this list, I started using
ATF in the ps resevoir instead of ps fluid. The ATF is a little
thicker and doesn't leak out the rack as fast as normal ps fluid.
