This seems like a fair price if everything is working ok and it really is in
nice shape. Things to verify: A/C actually works and blows cold air. Power
locks and power windows operate (slow operation of window could indicate
failure not to far down the road without some sort of maintence). Pull the
oil dip stick and feel the oil between your fingers. If they oil is black
and/or feels gritty, it may not have been changed in a long time which could
be an indication of general neglect on the car. Hard to check in the day
time, but see if all the dashboard light work. Nothing sucks more than
checking a car out by day, buying it, then finding out half the dashboard
lights are out.

If the body and interior are not as nice as you expected, that might be a
price reducer. One thing you might consider, since this guy is a mechanic and
is selling the car, rather than trying to reduce the price of the car, see if
you can get some sort of warranty from him. If he goes for it, then the car
might be as good as he claims it is since he would be willing to stand behind
it plus you have a little extra protection in case something does go wrong.
Keep in mind that it would probably be unrealistic to get free repairs over
the next year, but maybe he would agree to a 90-day labor deal where you will
pay for parts and he throws in the labor or some sort of thing like that.

In any case, it probably would be a good idea to take the car to ANOTHER
mechanic for a prepurcahse inspection.
