usually, if moving at higher speed brings down the engine temperature, it is
because of the greater flow of air across the radiator, which suggests that
all the other components are working in the cooling system. If a rad is not
working its best, a lower temp gauge reading from faster driving might
happen.

if driving faster doesnt help, then coolant is not moving properly
throughout the system (because of a severe total blockage ? because of a
completely FAILED radiator? because of a hole ?). if your expansion tank
melted, this is furthre evidence that coolant was not moving throughout the
system properly, because heat was obviously not being taken out of the
coolant at the radiator. No heat in the car is also another indication that
coolant was not moving through the system.

Did you have a massive hole ? NO, bc your expansion tank was still full.
Did the radiator fail completely ? probably not, not all at once. a
severe total blockage of coolant flow ? i dont know. internal failure
would constitute a severe blockage in my book, but i still dont know.

i once had to run my SAAB for almost six minutes while the temperature gauge
was climbing ABOVE the top of the range where H was. i figured the engine
was dead, but there were no prblems at all. (i did let it run for about a
half hour afterwards with boths fans and heater on.)

when my cars run too hot, i turn on the heat first, before the H zone is
reached. somtimes in my 86 9000T, as when the water pump was failing, the
engine would get about to the H. the A/C still w1orked, and turning it on
would activate both fans at WARP speed, which worked better than the heater
for bringing the temp down.

is there a flame trap/pcv filter or nipple in that car ? was it changed in
the last (recent) tune up ?

anyone else with better insight ?

jay

p.s. i live on the border and drive some of those roads a lot...your
vignette struck me with interest and pleasure. sadly, i could envision the
climax of your story as your SAAB rolled to a halt. more typically, i was
lucky to find some of those roads a perfect place for my SAAB to stretch its
1986-model-9000T-fastest-import-in-america-with-crazy-gearing-legs up to the
environ of 140 Mph.
