Wrong on two accounts. First of all, the alarm works just fine with no
remote - just use the key. Lost all the keys? Saab has a record of the
key codes from every car, and while a new key is outrageous, compared to
$1200, it's 'zip'. Of course, if you lose the remote and the key when away
from home, you may be in for a bit of down time. I hide a spare key
somewhere accessible under the car in one of those magnetic boxes - I'd
rather take a chance with some delinquent stealing the car than being
stranded in the middle of a dark and stormy night, poking around some sewer
grating with a stick and a piece of gum trying to retrieve my keys ;-)

Second, the programming goes the other way. The alarm computer is
programmed to accept the signal from the remote. To do this requires that
the car be put into the 'learn the code' mode, which requires the ISAT or
Tech II, or other compatible terminal. As for an independent alarm company
providing you with a remote, my *guess* is that with older systems, you can
'grab the code' with a suitable receiver and program any old remote to
generated that code. The thieves have learned this, of course, and so the
newest systems use a 'rolling code' remote, so that the same code will
never work the car twice in a row.
