Amateur Mechanic & 9-5 Aero Wagon

The one luxury the amateur mechanic has over the pro is time. How well the
pro's family eats depends on how fast he can perform a *quality* job. For
you and I, however, it's recreation.

Even more impressive is the 'drivetrain comparison' which you could perform
between Audi and Saab. Saab has a cut-away Aero engine, transmission,
front suspension on its stand, but to view the Audi in all its glory, you
need to visit BOTH the VW and the Audi stands (which are widely separated -
for marketing reasons, no doubt). This is because the VW stand has a full
drive train on the wall (yes, hung up like a picture - a BIG picture) but
the VW lacks the twin turbo engine. The Audi stand shows only the engine,
front transaxle, and transfer case. The Audi drive train must have
quadruple the parts count and eight times the complexity, all to achieve a
marginal improvement in mobility and road behavior. NINES #244 (our March
issue, shameless plug) will have an illustrated story on this.

Want another example? How about an oil pump drive - an idler shaft driven
off the cam belt, a pair of crossed helical gears driving a vertical shaft
which drives the gear-type oil pump, sitting in the sump. Compare that to
Saab's crankshaft mounted gear pump. This was on the VW 4-cylinder...
