Re: Motor Mounts Break In

My experiences with dealers are the following. They range from very
incompetent to competent. Motor mounts do not require break in periods. At
least in the 900 series cars 2 types of mounts were used; The solid rubber
and the oil filled(my '84 900 had solid rubber and my '93 Turbo has the oil
filled--I'm not sure Saab changed over). The oil filled mounts perform much
better due additional isolation provided by the oil.

In the 385,000 miles I've put on my Saabs have had the displeasure to change
a mount (front mount behind the radiator)4 times and at no time was there any
break in period. The engines felt smooth (as smooth as a 4 cyl. 900 engine
gets) from the moment I installed them.

It sounds like the dealer put in solid rubber mounts--Examine the
installation and see if the mounts are the same as original. To be honest,
I'm not sure if it is possible since I believe the dimensions are slightly
different but some 'dealers are quite inventive.

Personally, I do my own maintenance. However, on the rare occasion I have a
dealer perform service, I always ask to see the original parts so I can
compare them with the parts installed.

I notice from your note, you're from Alberta, Canada. You should note, during
very cold weather, the oil fill within the mount (assuming your vehicle
utilizes them) will become very viscous and may loose much of its vibration
damping characteristics. But I assume with over 400,000KM, you would have
noticed this condition before. I live in NYC where the weather rarely drops
to the teens. Even then, I didn’t sense any noticeable difference.

Good Luck
