The VDO odometer failure is very common on our cars, perhaps even
inevitable.

A nylon gear develops a hairline crack, a condition which is often brought
on by re-zeroing the odometer while the car is moving. Some claim success
in repairing the cracked gear themselves, I am not one of those (ending up
making things worse).

Options:

1) A competent speedometer repair shop can fix it.
2) Swap in a spare speedometer from another car.

Option 2 will cause you to have to apply an adjustment factor to arrive at
the real mileage.
