The *best way* is to draw a vacuum and then replace with precisely the
correct volume of refrigerant and lubricant. But that's not how I do it.

Ideally you get a table which shows the suction pressure and high pressures
as a function of air temperature at the condenser and evaporator and fill
until you get the right numbers. I've done this with my home system any
number of times before I discovered where it was leaking from and tightened
the fitting. Lacking the table, the gauges usually have guides printed on
the label that will get you close. Remember that too little is better than
too much. Also remember that by the time you need to do this again, the
little can will have leaked anything left in it to the ozone layer, so
after you're done, be a sport and take the half-full bottle to an approved
a/c technician so the freon can be recycled.
