Alternator Removal

87 9000 turbo:

The alternator is not charging so I'm running on battery. My first thought
is to replace the voltage regulator, that fixed the problem the last time
this happened on my '78 99. Boy, replacing the voltage regulator on that car
was a breeze! About as difficult as filling the washer fluid reservoir.

I got everything out of the way to get the alternator out but couldn't get
to the top mounting bolt, it looks like I need to get the car on a hoist to
be able to get under it *and* have the wheel removed at the same time.

Will I be able to get to the upper mounting bolt with a long socket
extension from the small teeny weeny space between the oil filter and the
flexible exhaust front pipe, or do I somehow go from above? Any chance my
impact wrench will fit in there? (I don't have an impact ratchet yet...)
