99 Exhaust Manifold Failure

I have a 1978 Saab 99 with between a quarter and a half million miles
(odometer failed long ago). I developed an exhaust noise near the engine
and, upon removing the heat shielding, found a bulge in the manifold right
where the exhaust from cylinders 2 and 3 from the head would impinge on the
manifold. The bulge was about 3 inches long and about 3/4 inch high, with a
cracked appearance like a parched, dried lake. Is this normal wear and tear,
or should I investigate further after replacing the manifold? Car runs
great, CO and CO2 are fine.
