>The USA uses Average Octane Number (AON). This is a simple average of RON
(Research Octane Number) and some other number.

The 'some other number' is MON:
Motor Octane Number.

RON is calculated by chemical analysis of the sample.
It basically measures the molecular weight (to wit: carbon content) of the
sample.
MON is calculated by using the sample in an actual engine. The engine is
a purpose built one-cyl engine with variable compression ratio.
Back in the olden days, when I was a gradual student, my school (WPI)
did the MON testing for the state of MA.
The testing procedure is somewhat elaborate for something so simple, but
interesting. Us gradual students EARNED the $20/test.

Anyways, the MON usually comes out 4 points lower than RON, since its's
done in real-world conditions, not lab conditions.
The state mandates that the figure reported on the pump be the average of
RON and MON, and, at least here in New Hampshire, the pumps have a sticker
on them that say:
(RON + MON)/2

>Anyway, a Trionic-controlled turbocharged SAAB should run flawlessly on
regular as well as premium, provided that the gasoline came from a quality
supplier.

Towards the end of its life (well, in my possession), I ran my '78 Turbo
on regular (87) gas.
I would only ping if you stomped on it real hard at relatively low RPMs. At
higher RPMs I couldn't get it to ping.
But, name brand (but NOT Mobil!) US gas.
