Hi everyone! Just back from the Saab Owners' Convention 2002 in Cincinnati.
Since I have had Saab 99s for over 20 years, I'm always sorry to see so few
at the conventions (9 99s this year compared to over 20 2-strokes).  So in
order to generate some enthusiasm, I did a tech session on Saab 99s (again)
this year and sponsored the convention to support 99s in general.  On the
positive side, I was positively thrilled by the number of people who came to
the tech session on History of the 99 - the 'forgotten' Saab. I printed 20
handouts and there must have been at least 50 in the room, so thanks to
everybody for coming! (let me know if you didn't get a handout and I can
email you one)  Likewise a number of people came up to me over the weekend
and talked about 99s in various states of readiness for future SOCs, and
several asked about buying 99s.   Here's the challenge, folks - let's get 20
(That's right, TWENTY) 99s at next years' SOC!!!! (Don't make me beg - it
won't be pretty).  I believe that there were 9 99s this year, roughly on par
with the last 5 years, I would say ( 11 at New Hampshire, few at Hilton
Head, good show at Colorado, didn't count at Kerhonksen, few at FLA).  Big
thanks to those who did turn out.  Best as I could capture it, here are the
SOC '02 99s:

1972 99E 1.85L Injected, 'California Burgundy' (purple to you easterners)
with 40K original miles.  A Beautiful 'Barn find' by David Warren (not SOC
registered, came in for the day from somewhere in Ohio).
1973 99EMS 2.0L Injected*, 'Lightning Blue' with 116K miles.  An real
eye-catcher just completed by Doug Majka; a whole lot of effort went into
this car and it looks great - always had a crowd around it!
1974 99 CombiCoupe 2.0L Carb*, Red with ?37K miles as Paul says.  Nice
example of first hatchback Saab - Paul did you see the NOS carb in the parts
swap area??
1975 99 EMS (Turbo) 2.0L Turbo*, Black with blue/yellow 'Stig Blomqvist'
stripes - 129K miles or so.  Another eye-catcher, Gary Tafoya's paint was
drying on the way down I-75 to SOC as I understand it.
1978 99 Turbo, Blue notchback Track/Street car, driven over 2000 miles from
Boise, ID by John Wirt - way to go John!  I only spoke to John briefly and
would like to learn more about this car's history.
1978 99 EMS, Silver with Gold wheels, by Neil Roeth.  I didn't get a chance
to talk to Neil much, but I've seen his car at other Saab 'events'
1978 99 Turbo 'Sport', 2.0L turbo w/'factory' water injection*, Silver with
77K Original miles.  Keith Landau's car get's nicer every time I see it.
Only heard of one other 'Sport' car still around in the USA.
1978 99 Turbo, 2.0L turbo, Black*, 203K miles on major mechanicals.  Gary's
first love, made it's SOC debut in 1988 - aren't you guys sick of seeing
this thing yet?
? 99 ?, Orange, some type of rally or competition equipment?  Saw this car
parked by the hotel but didn't get a chance to look it over or talk to the
owner.  Anyone have more info?

Let me know if I missed any!

All in all a nice representation of the various model years, and some cars
that a LOT of work has gone into.  Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to
everyone in depth (Paul, Neil, John) as I was balancing the 99, my 96, a
sick child, and children who were not real interested in old Saabs.
Hopefully, together with Bruce's list this should cover all the '2-digit'
Saabs at SOC '02
