Probably Autobianchi. Tiny little cars sold under the Lancia name as model
'Y10'.

Platform cousins to the 9000 indeed include the Alfa 164, Lancia Thema,
possibly the Fiat Croma, and maybe even the Citroen XM (I know the latter at
least shares the same ZF4HP18Q automatic tranny). The Lancia standard
engine options were very similar to those of the Alfa 164 - a 4-cylinder and
a V6. There was a limited run of very special (and expensive) Lancia Themas
equipped with a Ferrari V8 ! With this exception, no other car on this FWD
platform used anything larger than a 3.0 V6, and the most powerful engine
fitted is quite likely SAAB's B234R.

>The 164 is much much smaller inside.

This is true for all the 9000 platform cousins. I'd much rather be in a 9kT
5-speed hatchback than in any of the others, which are nowhere near the
SAAB's optimum combination of performance, people volume, cargo volume,
safety and general toughness. If you don't think 9kT 5-speed cars are
tough, you should see me tow other 9k's with mine.

>IS the 164 as structurally strong as a 9000 in safety terms ?

Personally, I would doubt it. A platform itself has very little impact on
the safety of the final automobile based upon it. Very few auto companies
have placed as much emphasis on safety as SAAB has, and I don't think Fiat
was one of them.
