ETS & Problem

I enjoyed reading the excellent description of 'drive-by-wire' supplied by
Mr. NINES.

Here's some info that may interest owners of '92-'93 9000 turbo models with
TCS (traction control system).

These cars have a drive-by-wire system which is called ETS (electronic
throttle system). The ETS ECU is located under the driver's seat, and is
accessible from the rear footwell once the driver's seat is moved all the
way forward.

Besides the ECU, the major component in the system is an electronic throttle
body unit. This unit incorporates an electric motor to move the throttle
flap, and a throttle-flap-position-potentiometer to tell the ECU how far
open the flap is at any point in time.

Finally, there is a pedal-position-potentiometer, that tells the ECU how
much 'go' the driver is asking for.

If the any of the ETS components, or if communication between them stops
working, or if a related circuit or system should develop a problem, there
is a limp-home throttle cable.

This cable is attached to the pedal arm just like in 'normal' cars, and
leads to the electronic throttle body, where it is either engaged to or
disengaged from the throttle flap by means of a spring and a vacuum
actuator.

When no vacuum is present (ie. engine off), or when the ECU turns off the
vacuum supply to the throttle body (by means of a solenoid valve), the cable
is engaged. When vacuum is present, and allowed to reach the throttle body,
the cable is disengaged, and ETS is in effect.

For the past 2 weeks I have been tinkering with our 'new' '93 9000CSE, which
is determined to run only in limp-home mode. After finally getting in to
the local dealer for an ISAT/Tech2 code-pull, I got the following info:

Trionic codes P0130, P0135 - indicating a bad o2 sensor.
ABS/TC code E7061 - communications fault between TCS and ETS ECUs.

I had previously determined the o2 sensor fault through the 'Check Engine'
light. I also ran the ETS ECU pin tests, and the only circuits that were
out-of-spec were the two that talk/listen to the TCS ECU.

I could whine about how a 'communications fault' with the TCS should not put
the ETS into limp-home mode, but that would be rather futile.

I will continue trying to fix the problem so that all functions are restored
as specified.

If I should not be successful, I am thinking of ways to disable the TCS
function, and just go with Trionic/ETS/ABS.

If anyone has done this successfully, please drop me a line. Any experience
with wiring modifications or ECU swaps would help.

If anyone has a repair procedure for ABS/TC code E7061, I would greatly
appreciate a copy if possible. Or, if you could point me to the appropriate
service manual section, I could go ahead and purchase it.

Thanks in advance.
