High Speed Shaking

I have a 1995 Saab 900S.  Auto transmission. 155K miles.

I have a problem that has stumped the garage that does all of the work on my
car (Mecca Motors in Allston, MA).

The problem is this:

When accelerating between 55 and 75 MPH the engine/drivetrain/steering wheel
shakes.  When I let off on the gas the shaking stops.  When I give it the
gas again, the car starts to shake again.  So, under load the car shakes.

They (the garage) has replaced the inner drivers on both sides and balanced
and trued up all wheels.

They now think that perhaps the vibration is coming from the transmission.
The bearing that the LH inner driver attaches to in the tranny show a little
bit of wear and 'slop'.  To remove and replace the tranny would cost about
$3000.  I am reluctant to do this, as is the garage, without knowing for
sure that this will cure the problem.  The garage also says that the
transmissions in these cars are very reliable and rarely have any problems.

Any ideas?
