Re: Compressor Seizing

I had the same problem with the AC compressor suddenly seizing, then
seeming to be OK. My recommendation to you: Immediately remove the AC
belt! In your year car, the AC belt drives nothing but the compressor.

In my case, one of the times the AC compressor seized, it threw the AC
belt. The AC belt hit the serpentine belt and knocked it off. To be
exact, it trapped the serpentine belt between the block and the idler
pulley. Not only did I need to have the car towed (no power steering,
water pump, alternator), but the serpentine belt chewed up its idler
pulley. I was out $40 for a new belt and $70 (USD) for a new pulley.

To further compound the problem, I didn't realize it was the AC
compressor that was the problem. I replaced the AC belt. About an hour
of driving later, the AC compressor siezed for good. Of course, the ACC
kept pulling the AC clutch in. Lots of smoke from under the hood, and
the AC clutch burned up. I removed the AC belt, and all has since been
well. Except that I don't have the AC.

I haven't gotten around to checking on replacement compressors. I'd
appreciate any info you come up with.

Good luck!
