Tire Pressure Mystery

I had the balding Falken tires on my '97 Saab SE turbo convertible
replaced with four 205/50ZR-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE730 Gen. 2's. The
guys at the garage -- not a Saab dealer, but they're pretty
knowledgeable and the head mechanic is a former Saab guy who's always
given me expert service -- advised a tire pressure of 44 pounds. I was
surprised. For its OEM tires, I think Saab recommends something like 34
or 37 pounds . So 44 seems very high, all the more because the
mechanics told me this was in reference to the rating printed on the
sides of the tires. But as I understand it, the pressure rating on the
tires itself is a MAXIMUM rating, not be exceeded. The mechanics'
response: 'Trust us, the car will handle best with the tire pressure at
about 43/44 pounds.' Hmm. Are they right? Is there a downside --
especially safety-wise -- to driving on tires that are inflated to the
max? I let some air out, just to be sure. Tires are now at 42 pounds.
Even before I did that, the car handled well though, better than
before; but maybe that's primarily because the tire tread is obviously
thicker than on my Falkens, and grips the road better. Any advice
appreciated.

Cheers,

Rogier van Bakel
