Puling a proper vacuum before refrigerant charging is very important.

You need an appropriate vacuum pump to do it right. Like this:

These are virtually useless. I've tried. The only way to go is the
electric 2-stage pump. The cheaper ones differ from the expensive ones
primarily in the CFM rating. This indicates how long it takes to pull the
required vacuum. I got a good deal a couple of years ago (under $300) on a
4 CFM Robinair unit. I have also heard from people who have rented
equivalent units from equipment rental places.

Last I checked, you must have a license and must own refrigerant handlig
equipment with an up-to-date performance certification ONLY IF you perform
a/c service work FOR CONSIDERATION. This means having other people paying
you actual money for the work.

The only restriction on working on your own a/c system at home is that
refrigerant can not be vented to the atmosphere. If it all gradually leaked
out by itself, you're legally OK.

Ahh, such a high level of honesty and character is a rare thing indeed in
today's automotive service industry. As I wrote before, if you show up at
an a/c service shop in a clean SAAB 9000 CSE, you should expect a 4-figure
service estimate.

If anyone has a more positive experience, posting the details to this list
(shop name, address, services performed and prices) would be extremely
valuable.
