I recently acquired a 1997 9000CSE with 29K. The car was well kept. I want to
keep the car for several years, but I am worried about the eventual high
maintenance costs. There are many things that I do for myself such as brakes,
tune-ups, fluid changes, belts, hoses and exhaust. There are many things that
I could do but that I don't have the time to do such as heater cores, head
gaskets, motor mounts, suspension. Then there are things that I couldn't do,
such as computer problems that require a Tech II.

I can buy an extended through AAA that is good for six years or until the car
reaches 100K. The price is $1600 and there is a $50 deductible per occurance.
I can use any licenced repair facility. The policy excludes the clutch
friction disk and the pressure plate, and consumables such as brake pads and
rotors. But otherwise the policy is fairly complete. It even covers struts
and shocks.

But I am wondering if my car will need any of those expensive things such as
a head gasket or heater core before 100K? The last time I bought one of these
policies it was for a Honda. Even though the price was only $600 for that
policy, I never used it. Not even once. But Saabs are a little different than
Hondas and I would hate to be stuck with a major repair bill. Any
suggestions? Should I just bank the $1600 and take money out for repairs as
they come along?
