I do believe that the $1,600 extended warranty is worth it.  I drive 50K 
miles/year and typically keep a car 130K - 230K miles.  My last few include 
93 9000 Aero, 95 9000CS, 96 9000 Aero, and my current 2000 9-5 Aero (104K 
miles already).  If you treat the car well and keep up with Saab's 
recommended maintenance schedule you will not benefit from the $1,600 
warranty.

Within the first 100K miles I usually:
1.  Replace the shocks with Koni's (because I like them, not because the 
OEM's are shot)
2.  Replace the water pump (usually at 70K-85K miles)
3.  Replace the voltage regulator (always before the brushes wear down and 
damage the commutator rings)
4.  Replace the front rotors and pads (only once at 100K miles; all my 
driving is Interstate)
5.  Replace 1 or 2 of the exhaust system components (only on my wife's 9000 
CS because she does a lot of short-trip local driving
6.  Replace several bulbs... headlight and others
7.  Perform ALL NORMAL MAINTENANCE recommended by Saab.  Saab procedures, and 
only OEM parts.
8.  Change oil every 5K miles.

On my 93 9000 Aero I did have to replace the head gasket at 75K miles ($800 I 
seem to remember).  That car has gone 200K miles since then..... no more head 
gasket problems.
