The hot hard starting sounds like a problem with my son's 85 900S. It
has the older Bosch mechanical CI fuel injection with the modern lamda
controls for mixture and emissions. It would not start when it was
hot. A local independent Saab repair shop replaced the fuel
distributor, on the air flow measuring body, and the problem went away;
for a while! I looked at it and replaced all those things that it
shouldn't have been; spark plugs, fuel filter, coil. No improvement.
By chance I found that a small rubber plug had split and fallen off the
bottom of the air cleaner housing directly under the linkage from the
air flow sensor where it presses upwards on a piston in the bottom of
the fuel distributor. Without the rubber plug dirty air had been
sucked in through the opening directly onto the linkage and piston.
While the car would start fine when cold, the dirt on linkage and the
fuel distributor piston combined with expansion of the parts from heat
would prevent the air flow sensor from raising the piston in its bore
when attempting to start the engine. The result was no fuel to the
injectors since the piston must move upwards to expose openings in the
fuel distributor that release fuel to the injectors.

This may be a problem for other Saabs with the early CI (continuous
injection). Later model Saabs with the electronic fuel injection don;t
use mechanical linkage and fuel distributor to control fuel flow,
relying on electrical impulses to the injectors to instead.
