Carbon Build Up

Recently I had a smog check done on my 1987 900S. While most readings were
incredibly clean, the NOx reading was VERY high (935 allowable, mine was
over 2400). At first I was told it was a simple mix adjustment, when that
didn't work, I had the catalytic converter replaced. Now, I'm being told
that I probably had carbon build-up, and to have it removed will be about
$1,000 ($175 parts + $800 labor). So my questions are: Can carbon build-up
be cleaned out by one of the fuel additives, or does it really require
tearing down my engine? How does the price seem? Any other suggestions on
improving (lowering) a NOx reading? Thanks in advance,
P.S. It otherwise is running wonderfully. Worst repair to date is a
thermostat and the bi-annual brake pads.
